Open vStorage - Open Source SDS

Open vStorageI recently came across an exciting technology called Open vStorage from CloudFounders that provides an abstraction layer between the storage presented to the virtual machines and the backend object storage.

This abstraction layer provides the following functionality:

Converged Storage - Some Available Options - Part 2

This is the second part of a two part article on converged storage solutions.  Part 1 is here.  Part 1 dealt with vSphere VSANEMC ScaleIO, Atlantis ILIO USXStorMagic SvSAN and Maxta SDS.  In this second instalment I'll try to consisely summarise:

CEPH - Highly Scalable, Open Source, Distributed File System

CEPH is perhaps one of the most talked about open source object storage projects, especially now that it can be used in OpenStack for primary (cinder - volume) storage as well as secondary (glance - image) storage.  This technology summary attempts to provide you with as much relevant information as possible in the shortest number of words.  Here are some of the most important features of this up and coming object store.

For further information please refer to the Credits and links collapsible section below.  There you will find links to documentation and companies that offer support services for this product.  At a later stage I will write a similar piece on GlusterFS, which is, rightly or wrongly, compared to CEPH.

Converged Storage - Some Available Options - Part 1

Converged storage options for the various hypervisors appear to be increasing.  The coverage in the press is also on the up, causing customers to review this technology as their data centre storage requirements grow.  This type of storage solution does not suit every set of requirements but it can offer some compelling advantages:

Citrix Project Accelerator - XenDesktop design wizard

Citrix documentation can be a bit hit and miss. I was struggling to find a decent reference architecture guide for XenDesktop 7.1 when I came across  the Citrix Project Accelerator - https://project.citrix.com/. This is a basic design wizard for XenDesktop (and XenApp) which takes into account workload, user count, feature requirement etc. and then creates a basic design with bill of materials etc. This obviously isn't capable of giving a full design, but as a starting point or sanity check of an existing design it does a reasonable job, and considering you can go through the wizard in 10-15 minutes it's a worthwhile exercise.
